Dragon Run

Hong Kong’s international paddling event and part of the World Surfski League, took place on Saturday, the 19th of November 2022 in the waters between Clearwater Bay and Stanley. The annual race welcomed an elite paddler from overseas – Sean Rice (two-time World Champion) – for the first time since the Covid restrictions. The event saw participation reaching record-breaking numbers of rookies, intermediate and elite paddlers from the local community.

Winnie Wong Hock Wing claimed victory in the Women’s Surfski division with her superb record-breaking performance, earning her 3rd consecutive Steelcase, The Dragon Run win, and South African Sean Rice took home the Men’s Surfski division trophy for the second time. In the Men’s OC1 category, Alex Hunter convincingly won his category, whilst Martina Redaelli claimed the Women’s OC1 crown.

The much anticipated Novice Course welcomed an ensemble of astoundingly competitive emerging paddlers to compete at Steelcase, The Dragon Run. Open to single and double surfskis, OC1s and OC2s, and Ocean Kayaks, the new course was 6km in length, starting at Victoria Recreation Club in Deepwater Bay, proceeding around Middle Island, and then returning to the starting point. The Novice Race is becoming more popular and welcoming the less experienced future champions.

“Another fantastic race,” said Bruce Seymour, Steelcase, The Dragon Run race director. “Record number of local entries shows Hong Kong that paddling is growing fast.”

Uli Gwinner, contesting paddler and regional president of Steelcase Asia Pacific said: “It was a pleasure to once again support The Dragon Run this year. It has been very rewarding to see the impressive growth of the surfski community in Hong Kong, and how this annual race has helped bring people closer to the nature and drive the awareness of the importance of protecting our marine environment. It was also a thrill to see the return of elite paddlers from overseas to this beautiful city. We look forward to an even more diverse, competitive and exhilarating race next year, hopefully welcoming back even more international paddlers.”
