Seawise Giant anchor being installed on the Central waterfront

Seawise Giant anchor

On the 27th of March, the anchor of the Seawise Giant arrived at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza, on the Central waterfront. It was brought from the Government Dockyard on Stonecutters Island. As the main exhibit of the plaza, the anchor of the largest cargo vessel ever built will become an important symbol of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza received funding in 2022 from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as a Chief Executive's Community Project. This free access plaza is located on the waterfront, behind Central Piers 9 and 10, and adjacent to the museum. The project is expected to be completed and open to the public by September this year.

The plaza will provide a new interactive public learning space to showcase the city's rich maritime cultural heritage. In addition to displaying the anchor of the Seawise Giant, the plaza will feature a walk-through pavilion with immersive ArtTech displays and interactive screens, allowing visitors to delve deeper into Hong Kong's marine life and maritime history. The project aims to create an active space for education, entertainment and art. Visitors can not only appreciate Hong Kong's significant maritime cultural heritage but also enjoy an immersive learning experience.

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is a cultural link connecting Hong Kong with its rich maritime history, art, and science. The completion of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Jockey Club Anchor Plaza will further expand the museum's reach into public life.

About the anchor of the Seawise Giant

The 36-ton Seawise Giant anchor, which originally had 20 shackles of chain (about 27.4 metres per shackle), is 7 metres long in the shank, 4.45 metres across the flukes and 1.13 metres thick.

This anchor was once installed on the Seawise Giant, the largest cargo vessel ever built. The ship, once owned by Hong Kong shipping magnate CY Tung, and subsequently sailed under a number of other owners and names, was dismantled on the beaches of Gujarat, India, in 2010 after 35 years of service. It was a considerable challenge moving the anchor from Gujarat to Hong Kong's Government Dockyard where it has been in temporary storage since June 2010. The anchor stands as a symbol of the vessel's former glory, embodying Hong Kong's fascinating maritime story.

On the 27th of March 2025, the anchor was transported by road from Stonecutters to Central, marking the final steps toward the plaza's grand opening.

20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum

In 2025, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the theme of 'Anchoring the Past, Navigating the Future". It coincides with the arrival of the anchor at the plaza. Over the past 20 years, the museum has showcased Hong Kong's unique maritime culture and history and has become a bridge connecting the past with the future.
