DBYC thrives

Discovery Bay Yacht Club (DBYC) is based in Discovery Bay on Lantau Island. The members are yacht owners and sailors who enjoy fun and friendly regattas, cruises and races. Their aims are two : to draw local sailors together in friendly, social sailing events, and to introduce beginners to the thrills of yacht racing.

Since its first regatta in September 1999, DBYC members have competed successfully in many local events as well as joining races to the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand. The club hosts events through the year, including day racing, islands cruising, weekend sailing rallies, BBQs and parties. It aims to explore those parts of Hong Kong that are otherwise inaccessible, and many of its members are experienced cruisers, happy to share their knowledge of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

A highlight of the club calendar is Sokos Under the Stars, a rally held in November. Boats anchor overnight among the Sokos Islands and hold a barbecue ashore. The event is usually accompanied by singing and a bonfire. In the morning, a tour of the island is offered by one of the members, who can relate details of the fascinating history of these remote islands off southern Lantau.

On the 10th of December 2021, the club’s Christmas Party was held at Club Siena in Discovery Bay, and attracted 65 people. The party is held at different venues every year but the idea is to stay close to home and support local businesses on Lantau. Members enjoy a feast, free drinks, and a recap of the year’s events with slideshows and prizes for outstanding achievements.

The DBYC is currently welcoming new members and offers a very reasonable joining fee – email treasurer@dbyc.net or visit the club’s website dbyc.net for more details. Join the sailing fun!
